The folks at Eagle Rock are continuing their fine Montreux Jazz series with this stellar 1989 show featuring the Super Guitar Trio of Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, and French stud Bireli Lagrene. I was lucky enough to catch these three on this tour that same year at New York's Palladium, and remember fondly the magic that they created. Watching this DVD brought back some wonderful memories, and for those experiencing the trio for the first time, be prepared to be wowed. DiMeola and Coryell had worked together before, but Lagrene in 1989 was a relative newcomer on the international guitar scene, although heralded in his homeland and among serious musicians. The three blazing gunslingers tear through 8 lengthy pieces here, bringing the Montreux crowd to their feet with an amazing array of melody, technique, speed, and artistry. DiMeola shines on the "Orient Blue Suite / Traces Of A Tear" medley, while he and Coryell perform as a duet on the enchanting "Tango Suite (for two guitars)". Gypsy legend Lagrene really shows his unique style on the amazing "Musette De Paris Avec La Rue Dupierre No.5", but the real treat are the final two numbers, the Chick Corea penned classics "No Mystery" and "Spain". On these legendary & memorable songs, the trio just blaze away and leave you speechless at the sheer talent they possess, playing off each other as if by some telekenetic signal.
With the combination of solo songs and reinterpretations of some of their favorites, these three guitar monsters gave us a tour to remember back in 1989. Now, with this DVD, everyone can experience the magic.
