Spider Rockets: Ever After
Spider Rockets combine crunchy guitars with a somewhat indie rock vibe. Ever After is the band's third album. Their guitar riffs at times are reminiscent of Pantera, and newer hard rock bands such as Velvet Revolver. The female lead vocalist gives a tough creepy sound, a bit similar to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
The guitar playing is the best part of this album, as there is some neat lead guitar work; however, there isn't enough of it. The riffs on the album are too simple and overused to hold much merit on their own. They have lots hooks, but the main hooks come from the vocal melodies and lyrics which are one may rather not have stuck in his or her head.
This band definitely leaves their stamp on a cover of the Beatle's "Helter Skelter". But it isn't a stamp worth owning. The rearrangement just doesn't do the song the justice.
Spider Rockets leave a lot of room for improvement, such as continuing to find their own sound, and pushing themselves more lyrically, but as long as this vocal style remains this reviewer will not be a fan. However, if the band continues to push in the direction of the ending track 'Whispers' the band may show something worthwhile in the future, as it is the best track. This song has some interesting changes in direction, rhythms, and pace, and the vocals are less creepy and more ethereal. However, some parts of the song sound very familiar.
As it is this album doesn't beg for repeated listens.
