Silver Sun: Dad's Weird Dream

Before even hearing a note of Silver Sun's (a power pop quartet hailing from the U.K.) latest effort entitled Dad's Weird Dream, one of the first things I noticed was that these guys have been around for over 10 years, no small feat in the fickle world of the British music scene. After some further reading of their bio it's mentioned that Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich's first real production job was on Silver Sun's debut back in 1997. Now fully intrigued, I decided it was time to finally give the music a spin and it quickly became apparent and quite easy to understand on the first listen as to why these guys have been around so long; it's because their music is damn good! The secret to Silver Sun's sound lays primarily in their ability to pepper each song with catchy choruses which go heavy on the multi layered harmonies and elevate each song to almost anthem like status. Most of the songs on Dad's Weird Dream don't even hit the 3 minute mark (except for the instrumental title track which closes the disc) as they rip through 13 songs in a shade under 40 minutes. Their sound is an inspiring mix of power pop, punk with a distinctively 80's keyboard vibe running throughout and when you combine that with their humorous lyrical approach and the aforementioned plethora of vocal harmonies, you're sitting on an instant winner.
