Sacred Rite: Resurrection

Hawaii's preeminent metal band Sacred Rite has stepped back into the spotlight after a nearly 21-year absence. Vocalist Mark Kaleiwahea belts the bruised blooze that made this band, uh, famous on the boogie intensive "I Didn't Mean To Do It" and "High Society," two of the album's best tracks. Guitarist Jimmy Caterine riffs and crunch chords his way through the whole album, calling to mind the glory days of early Van Halen as often as he brings a meaty, almost southern rock inflection to the fold. The band––rounded out by bassist Peter Crane and late drummer Kevin Lum who appears here via sampled drums––also manages to get its NWOBHM on with "Long Way Down" and gives up some Deep Purple on "Schizophrenia." The two commercial appeals here––"The Phoenix" and "Cry," plus the workaday rocker "Resurrection"––don't have the requisite heft to catapult the comeback album into the stratosphere but one gets the sense that Sacred Rite has largely made this album to celebrate its legacy and, maybe, attract the attention of a few old fans.

Sacred Rite: Resurrection

My Score:

This aptly titled CD celebrates Sacred Rite's first album in 18 years with nine songs of Van Halen-inspired, blues-driven classic hard rock that sounds as if it were still the late-Eighties. Back then, Sacred Rite had a deal with Polygram Records but splintered after drummer Kevin Lum left the band to battle diabetes (he passed away from the disease in 2002). Guitarist Jimmy Caterine went on to record two solo albums, vocalist/guitarist Mark Kaleiwahea toured with Slaughter, and the band was anthologized in a two-CD compilation issued in 2000 by Sentinel Records.

Now comes Resurrection, featuring the three remaining original members (Caterine, Kaleiwahea and bassist Peter Crane), with all drums and percussion extracted from samples of Lum's recordings with Sacred Rite between 1983 and 1986. The result is a record that chugs along with blistering rockers like "I Didn't Mean To Do It," "High Society" and "The Phoenix." And if this thing really was recorded "in Pete's living room, Mark's garage and Jimmy's bedroom," as the liner notes attest, props to the uncredited producer who made Resurrection sounds stellar.
