What's this? A female-fronted progressive-metal band with a singer who doesn't do opera? Turn it up!
This Italian quintet garners inspiration from the usual prog-rock/prog-metal suspects: Rush, ELP, Yes, Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation. Throw in a little Toto and Tool, and you'll get an idea of what Time sounds like on Beyond the Wall of Sleep. This five-song EP demonstrates the band's confidence, and powerful and melodic songs like "A Strange Whisper," the title track and the anthemic instrumental opener "The Mush-Room" show plenty of promise. Vocalist Monica Calvieri's range goes from high to low in a matter of notes, but she seems most comfortable singing in an earthbound voice that accentuates her solid delivery style. And that is a good thing...
