Snowdogs:Deep Cuts, Fast Remedies
Whether you're a fan of pop punk or not, be warned, Snowdogs is one tight outfit. "Deep Cuts, Fast Remedies" is chock full of punchy rhythms and catchy melodies. They blend the best elements pop-core,(the melody and hook), then fuse it with smart songwriting, a straight ahead rock pulse and a slew of influences ranging from ELO to the Rolling Stones. Brothers VILLE (vocals & guitar) and MAT LEPPANEN (bass) both have a definite talent for penning sharp lyrics while drummer BENJY REID provides a steady backbeat. Satire songs, like "Popstars (Love This)", "Hell Outta Dodge", "Your Sorry Ass", humorously explore everything from the pop stardom, marital commitment, to job satisfaction. Most satisfying however is the diversity of music available from such a simple rock album. "Hours of Sunshine" skirts the big-band California ska prevalent with bands like "No Doubt", and "Reel Big Fish", while the pulse pounding opening track "Average Kid" leans heavily on late 80's guitar rock. My favorite track "Drive" has a catchy chorus riff reminiscent of Jeff Lynne's "Don't Bring Me Down". In fact, there are no two songs on this disc that remotely alike or follow the same exact formula… an achievement considering the slew of sound alike pop-core bands on the current scene. It also helps to have big, fat production values. With veteran producer Steve Brown (The Cult) behind the board "Deep Cuts" sounds more like the newest release from Atlantic Records rather than an indie output.
Although, Snowdogs aren't the newest prog-rock sensation they deserve a look for anyone interested in music outside the metal genre. For straight ahead, melody driven rock and roll, it all adds up into one hell of an easy listen.
