It took them two years, but those death-grinders known as Cephalic Carnage have followed up the strong Anmolies with an even better gut-buster, the intense, complex, riff-masher Xenosapien. This is one hell of a brutal ride, as the band churn out a relentless array of brutal, deep growls, super complex guitar work, and some of the sickest drum work you are likely to hear. At times it's almost too much to bear, as this pummeling attack hardly lets up for a second, save for a few doomy passages here and there. Head spliters like "Divination & Volition", "Endless Cycle of Violence", and "Touched By An Angel" feature mind-blowing psycho riffs flying over maniacal drum work and inhuman growls & screams, with no rest for the wicked. Thing is, all this insanity is so well played and so well produced, that you can't help but be sucked into the whole thing and get your head smashed from pillar to post. If you like complex shit, well then you've come to the right place-think Mastodon cranked up to 15 with an extra helping of brutality and you've got an idea of what to expect here. Some of the songs tend to be a bit too frantic and intense for their own good, but when these guys decide to throw in some sludgy doom with quick zaps of Between the Buried and Me/Dillinger Escape Plan/Mastodon proggy/jazzy bits, like they do so well on the gargantuan "Heptarchy" and the freakazoid "Megacosm of the Aquaphobics", things really start to get interesting. Of course, if you like straight ahead death-grind, check out the mammoth stomp of "The Omega Point" or the obliterating pummelization of "Ov Vicissitude", the latter of which features some of the most intricate and jaw dropping drum and guitar work on the CD.
Xenosapien certainly won't be for everyone, but if your thing is intense, brutal, extremely complex death metal with a grind mentality and plenty of fusion elements, you've come to the right place. Cephalic Carnage have proven here that they are now an extreme band that is ready to be taken seriously. Brutal stuff folks-check it out.
