Colorado's Satan's Host have been around in one form or another since the late 1970's, releasing one album in 1986 called Metal From Hell, but otherwise toiled around in the underground amidst many line-up changes and tragedy (original drummer D. Lucifer Steele was murdered in 1989), until now that is. Newly signed to Moribund Cult Records, Satans's Host have unleashed Burning the Born Again...(A New Philosophy), a combination of thrash, black, death, and power metal styles. The production here is pretty rough and ready, but the band know how to weave some intense & catchy metal riffs, surrounded by evil growls and jackhammer drum work. Some of the cavernous riffs remind a little of the latest AngelCorpse record, especially tunes like "H.E.L.L.", the rampaging title track, the doomy death-dirge "Unholy Sabbath (which features some wicked guitar leads), and the brutal stomp of "Inverted Jesus". While the first few listens might give one the impression that Satan's Host have somewhat of an identity problem, they are very adept at going from sludgy doom, to hate filled death metal, to manic & Satanic black metal, to riff-fueled thrash. Some listeners might have problems keeping track of just what style will prevail in the end, and the CD is a tad on the longish side, but Satan's Host perform it all with obvious skill and mastery of their craft, making Burning the Born Again...(A New Philosophy) a satisfying listen when it's all said and done.
