Matt Thompson, founding member of the experimental-noise outfit Guapo, ventures further toward music's outer edges with his lofty Rashomon project. Hailed as music at the nexus of avant prog, Balkan folk, traditional metal and psych rock, The Ruined Map (Film Music Volume 1) borrows from obscure soundtrack composers to create eight instrumental tracks based on equally obscure pieces of experimental narrative cinema. Each one is dramatically different: the buzzing, clanging and tooting of "A Quiet Week in the House" set against a somber violin backdrop. The ambience of howling wind in "Lancelot Du Lac" and the crashing of waves and flight of gulls in "Confessions of an Opium Eater." The heady foray into Judas Priest-style metal on "Branded to Kill." The discombobulation of "The Mascot." And the utterly unlistenable cacophony of the oxymoronic "Blast of Silence." It all makes for adventurous (but not always desirable) listening.
