Taking its cues from any number of female-fronted gothic-metal bands, most notably The Gathering and Lacuna Coil, Poland's Moonlight alternate dark, moody and ambient passages with crunching guitars and pretty keyboards. This approach helps maintain listeners' interest, and singer Maja Konarska's voice is ideal for the genre. Of the 11 tracks on Moonlight's fifth album, Yaishi, "A Story to Forget," which reveals the band's heavier and angrier side, and "Jesugej von Baatur," which dabbles in progressive metal more than the others, are among the most original.
That said, the songs (all sung in English, by the way) tend to get monotonous – not only because of their unconventional titles ("Col," "Ergo Sum," Meren-Re," "Jesugej von Baatur," "Gebbeth" and even a symbol), but also because you quickly get the feeling you've heard this all before.
