Come Now Sleep is the latest from indie-pop/post rock/avant-metal/prog band (yeah, they are all that) As Cities Burn. Despite the fact that the band announced its demise and even completed what was to be a 'farewell tour' in 2006, here they are again, with guitarist Cody Bonnette taking over the lead vocals from his departed brother T.J. on this brand new release on Tooth & Nail/Solid State Records. The band's trademark jangly yet heavy sound is still in place, always quite melodic, whether they are crashing through a driving alternative rocker like "The Hoard", an atmospheric number such as "Contact", the noisy post rock of "Clouds", lush, soul searching prog as on "New Sun", or the daring jpsychedelia housed within a pop framework on the epic "Timothy". Layers of guitars weave through the mix on every piece, supported by plenty of keyboard washes, and Cody's haunting vocals just drift over the arrangements. At times the band can be accused of sticking to a similar tempo for too long, and honestly a few of the tracks here are almost interchangeable, but there's enough to to recomment to fans of artsy modern rock with an edge.
