Fans of the influential British art rock band 10cc finally have cause to celebrate, as for the first time in over three decades, two original members, Kevin Godley and Graham Gouldman have come together to work on new material. The unlikely collaboration initially began in 2004 when Godley reached out to Gouldman with the idea that they should get together and write some songs just for the hell of it to see what would happen. The material the duo has been working on for the past three years is now available for download only and can be purchased directly from their website (www.gg06.co.uk) which at present offers a total of 6 songs. This probably explains why my copy came in the form of a five song CD-R, which unfortunately contained no artwork or information of any kind. No big deal because it's the music which really impresses here.
Overall the songs are more stripped down and organic than anything the duo ever recorded as members of 10cc, the trademark layered sound remains but these tracks are more precise and to the point than past efforts. The lead off track "Son Of Man " (a bit of an autobiographical number) probably has the most in common with their former outfit as it makes oblique references to their storied history. "The Same Road" is a rather simple yet highly effective number which features sparkling keyboards and a great introspective vocal from Godley, who through his character ponders love in an empty world whilst stuck in traffic. It's interesting and rather ironic that all the lead vocals are handled by Godley and yet he never once managed to sing lead on a 10cc track during his time in the band. "Johnny Hurts" is another meditative, mid tempo song which once again delivers with its absorbing lyrics and simple yet hypnotic rhythms. As good as these tracks are, they act as a bit of a setup for the strongest number on this collection of new songs, "Beautifulloser.com". This is an absolutely stunning composition which clocks in at over 8 minutes and features a beautifully heartfelt vocal performance by Godley, accompanied solely by piano. As the song reaches its dramatic conclusion, Godley double tracks his vocals with a higher pitched falsetto guaranteed to make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up. The final song, "Hooligan Crane" is merely an average track that relies heavily on electronic percussion, but musically it doesn't really go anywhere.
It's great to see these two talented, original members of 10cc back working together and while by their own admission, 6 tracks in 3 years isn't exactly prolific; it's definitely a promising new beginning for both of them. I just hope I live long enough to see a full length release.
