Metal Mind Productions & Roadrunner Records have teamed together to re-release the little known 1991 debut CD of Atlanta, GA Prog Metal band Kinetic Dissent, I Will Fight No More Forever. This release is a limited & numbered edition of 2000.
To be completely honest, I had never heard of Kinetic Dissent before. They came out in the era of Queensryche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Crimson Glory, Voivod and other Progressive Metaller's of that time and were obviously lost in the shuffle. This re-release of their 1991 debut is most similar to a poor man's Fates Warning, dark & brooding but lacking in Fates' complexity of song structure and execution. The first thing that is noticed is that late '80's, early '90's lackluster production steeped in thick compression. To be honest it sounds more like a good demo than a good debut record.
This CD offers 9 tracks of mediocre early 1990's styled Progressive Metal, the type that was contrived and not really well executed. The songs drag on without much direction in more of a "changes for changes" sake idea than anything else. The songwriting on I Will Fight No More Forever is quite amateurish at best, with the true highlight being the CD closer "Reworked", with it's strong instrumental beginning and dissonant feel.
A lot of bands have suffered the same fate of not getting their real shot of becoming something on the music map, some better bands than Kinetic Dissent and some worse. But normally if almost 20 years have gone by and you still haven't heard of a band and they have only produced one record, there usually is a reason for that. Kinetic Dissent are one of those bands better left to a faded memory than trying to resurrect what you once thought was good.
