Once again, here's another fine new Swedish extreme metal band. Scarpoint take their influences from such bands as In Flames, Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Soilwork, Lamb of God, and At the Gates, and have put together a strong debut here with The Silence We Deserve on Blind Prophecy Records. You can tell these guys have been together for close to 7 years now, as the music here is pretty tight and the band sounds extremely confident. At just under 40 minutes, the CD is somewhat on the short sside, but the good thing is each track is to the point and you don't get much filler. Produced by the famed Daniel Bergstrand (who has also worked with In Flames and Meshuggah), The Silence We Deserve is a pretty huge sounding record, with the mammoth machine gun riffing of Zoran Kukulj & Alexander Nord leading the charge alongside the brutal vocal growls and screams coming from the throat of Henrik Englund. The kinetic drums of Erik Thyselius and gurgling bass lines from Eric Holmberg adds plenty of groove laden bottom end to this very heavy album. Standout tracks are the Meshuggah meets Fear Factory bombast of "Against My Will", the melodic yet crushing "Disorder", the atmospheric & textured approach of "Terminal Treachery", and the smashing brutality of "Imposture". It's hard to classify the band solely as a death metal band, as there are plenty of thrash and even metalcore elements to be found here, but no matter how you look at it you get quality metal all around. The Silence We Deserve is a very solid and promising debut, showing that Scarpoint are without a doubt a band to keep an eye on in the months and years to come.
