Monarkh: Rites Profanes

This ambient journey into the abyss released under the moniker of Monarkh is actually the brain child of P. Pelletier, who is also a member of Quebec City's black metal terrors Monarque. Unlike the ruthless and punishing assault of that band, the Monarkh project aims to permeate the listeners mind with an aural landscape of dark atmospheres through various sound effects but with very little in the way of actual music. What music there is, is primarily constructed over a minimalist synthesizer background as various sounds effects such as creaking doors, clanging chains, whispered vocal effects and what sounds at times like the snapping of a whip, weave in an out of the picture.

Rites Profanes poses a challenge to the listener to conjure up their own black visions of despair, all Monarkh has done is provided the soundtrack , which is precisely how this disc comes across. The effects are creepy and at times disturbing and while it's intriguing for the first few listens, there really isn't much to sustain you beyond that.
