Light Pupil Dilate: Snake Wine

What do you get when you mix elements of Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, Helmet, Hum & Faith No More? You get a very cool Atlanta, GA power trio called Light Pupil Dilate. Their latest CD, Snake Wine (Lifeforce Records) is a 9 track Indie Rock powerhouse of airy, in your face Hard Rock with Mathy Hardcore themed riffage. Picture modern day post-Punk meets Prog-Thrash Metal.

Light Pupil Dilate are a truly unique animal. A 3 piece band that uses sounds and textures that sound more like a 5 piece band with all of their chaotic grooves throughout Snake Wine. LPD twist and turn their way through the 9 songs on this CD with layered and bombastic guitar riffs from Eric Searle, upfront thumping bass lines from Mike Chvasta and the held together with the super tight grooves by drummer Michael Green. Like a true 3 piece of yesteryear, there are shared vocals from both Searle and Chvasta.

Snake Wine starts off with the throaty "Prana" and never lets up. Track after track offering up an innovative mixture of thick and brooding heavy rock, infused with a genuine sense of exploration. Songs like "Big Open" and "Twinkly" push the envelope of their songwriting chops and this is where the Tool influence really shines through. Great musical interludes are evident on a bunch of the 9 songs on Snake Wine and are often followed by strong Indie Rock styled vocals, that are sometimes shouted and always convincing.

Light Pupil Dilate have a mean and tough CD here, and it's one of those records that gets better with every listen. With the dual lead vocals, tight and pulsing rhythm section and interesting guitar work, LPD is an truly unique band to keep an eye on. Most bands that play "outside the box" go mostly unnoticed by the masses, but who cares? This is not music for the mainstream and thank god! Quality and interesting music is alive in well in good old Atlanta, GA.
