Till We Die: Pressing On

Talk about misleading packaging: From the kamikaze band name to the winged-skull cover illustration and bored-in-study-hall-style logo, Till We Die's Pressing On defies expectations. Opening track "Ride" could have been an outtake from a Staind or Hoobastank record, and "Low" recalls an understated Green Day. But "Slave," "Selfish," "Ting" and the title track, with their screamo vocals, rapid-fire riffs and snotty attitude, sound more like what I expected on the debut CD from this Massachusetts-based band, whose stage show has been compared to that of fellow statesmen Godsmack. Some of Pressing On comes off sounding dated, and the song ideas begin to repeat themselves. But this is solid, reliable alt-metal/nu-metal/whatever the hell it's called these days for angry teens and 20-somethings with nothing better to spin. To its credit, Till We Die packs more melodic punches than many of its counterparts, with a tendency to favor clean vocals over hardcore yelling. That's worth something.
