North Carolina's ASG return with their fourth release, the smoldering platter titled Win Us Over, and my prediction is that they certainly will 'win over' non-believers once they get their brand of stoner/doom-meets-technical metal-meets-alternative styled music out to the masses. Win Us Over contains 13 tracks of tasty riffage, memorable melodies and arrangements, and a great mix of varied vocal styles, culminating in a very worthwhile extreme metal album. Let me re-phrase that; not all of what you will hear here on Win Us Over falls into the extreme category. "Low End Insight" is a chunky rocker that owes more to the stoner rock category than anything else, and "Glow" even has some 'emo-ish' catchy vocal melodies amidst the pummeling guitar riffs. Even "Coffee Depression Sunshine" and "Taking Me Over" have a sort of alternative/psychedelic/Soundgarden-ish vibe to them that is hard to classify. However, bruisers like "Right Death Before", "Dream Song" (probably the best song here), "Low End Insight", "The Dull Blade", and "Bombs Away" contain enough pulverizing riffs, clean and extreme vocals, and pounding riffs to satisfy lovers of the more heavier aspects of metal. Throw in some wild fuzz-toned guitar solos which might bring you back to the 70's, and you have an enjoyable release that should appeal to a wide variety of metal fans.
