Hardy, Marina: Pink Violin
Not sure what to make of this bizarro, convoluted critter. Pink Violin is an all instrumental collision of styles & sounds from Marina Hardy, who plays all the instruments herself, including guitars, accordion, keyboards, horns, woodwinds, percussion, violin & various other strings. One minute you are travelling into deep dark space ala-early 70's Tangerine Dream, the next minute you are hearing a wild distorted guitar solo, the next some demented polka jig, the next a soul-searching jazz journey, and even some funk, blues, gypsy jazz, and avant-garde thrown in for good measure. It's very obvious that Hardy is a well schooled and talented musician, but her reluctance to stick to one style here ultimately hurts Pink Violin. Much of the album becomes a roller coaster ride for the listener, as just when you settle into one groove Marina takes you in a totally new direction. Many will find the avant-garde pieces here either too jarring or too minimalistic, yet there's a good bet the more jazz-flavored numbers will be well received. Let's see if next time around this multi-instrumentalist can stay a bit more focused and deliver something that has a little wider appeal.
