Spaced Out: Live At the Crescendo Festival (DVD)

The companion DVD to the recently released Live At the Crescendo Festival sees Canadian instrumental progressive fusion heroes Spaced Out performing live at the Crescendo Festival in France back in 2006. The group, comprised of Antoine Fafard (electric bass), Martin Maheux (drums), and Marc Tremblay (electric guitar), are all virtuosos in their own right, and their talents fully on display here throughout this set. Featuring a pretty expansive set list of songs culled from throughout their four album discography (16 to be exact), the band were actually playing their first concert ever in Europe, and you can really tell the excitement and focus of the trio from the opening notes, as they really worked hard to impress here. The music of Spaced Out is highly complex yet melodic, with Fafard and Tremblay working up plenty of muscular unison lines and riffs, and Maheux dropping in tight rhythms and flashy fills. If the telepathic synergy between these three is not impressive enough, there are plenty of solo spots for each musician to shine on his own, which is where Maheux & Fafard's jazz leanings show, and Tremblay's metallic muscle comes out.

Production wise this DVD was expertly filmed, and the sound is outstanding. Those expecting an exciting visual experience need to take note; after all, this is an instrumental trio, so the guys are not about moving around the stage much and giving you a 'visual show'. It's all about the music here, so if you think 90 minutes of this sort of thing might get a little tedious to watch, you might be better off picking up the CD version of this same concert. Either one is a complete winner though for fans of this type of instrumental progressive fusion. Take your pick.
