Palmer, Tony: The Space Movie (DVD)

Many might ask why we are reviewing the DVD debut of Tony Palmer's film The Space Movie, which is basically a documentary released in 1979 celebrating the 10 year anniversary of man's first landing on the moon. Well, because legendary prog rock musician Mike Oldfield provided the soundtrack to this long respected film, adding extracts from his popular works Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge and weaved them around NASA footage and soundtrack dialogue between the astronauts and ground control units in Houston, Texas. When The Space Movie was first released nearly 30 years ago, it received much acclaim, and it's not hard to see why. Much of the footage in the film was never before seen, as it takes you through the planning of the journey, lift-off, life on the ship, and of course the team landing on the moon and exploring the landscape in their little machines, all the way to their journey home. While you can't expect top notch quality of the footage, and the audio levels of Oldfield's excellent musical score is at times all over the place, there's no denying the historical significance of the content of this movie. Prog fans especially might want to pick up a copy of this DVD to show their children and future grandchildren not only an important time in history, but also to expose them to the music of an innovator of the prog rock scene.
