Toilet Boys: Sex Music

Before we go any further this new Toilet Boys album is not quite truly new Toilet Boys material but instead a bunch of songs that were written and recorded during the days when the band was doing their final tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band was one who was known for bombastic pyrotechnical displays during their shows and while on a European tour had learned of the tragedy during the Great White performance where almost 100 fans were killed by such a display gone wrong and rather than change their manner of delivery they decided to call it quits. The group is considered one of the last great Punk bands to come out of the New York City scene, and this makes sense with the landscape changing as dramatically as it has since they first came on the scene. Gone are the legendary clubs like CBGB's and The Continental where groups such as this gathered on a regular basis and with this being the case we might not see their kind come forward until the geography shifts once again. There is quite a New York City feel to a lot of the tunes embodied on this release and while I was never the TB scholar its not a bad place to start ones journey into their music and back catalog. "Sex Music", the title track finds Blondie's Debbie Harry offering up a guest appearance and it's a grooving tune that is loaded with Miss Guy attitude and we should really expect no less from such a singer. Of the eight original tracks I really loved the kicking into gear we get from "Gods & Monsters" as well as the trippy-ethereal vibe of "Astrological". These two were the best tracks off the record by far. They do a Ramones cover with "Carbona Not Glue" and while this was never one of my favorite songs from the leather jacketed legends the Toilet Boys manage to pull it off rather well. The CD closes with three remixes and I could have done without those to be brutally honest. I would have preferred they included another new track or perhaps some live versions of their staple numbers to better make this a more well-thought out compilation. The remixes might serve well for some dance crowd but I don't know too many clubs that are entertaining this kind of music outside of the Rock venues, and generally they stick with expected standard as opposed to stuff like this. I enjoyed the CD but felt its not really for the new listener and more for their enthusiast who must have everything that they release. The group offered more to the scene than we can find on this album but still at the end of the day it's not a totally bad listen. Check it out and get a glimpse into what the dark Rock clubs of the Lower East Side used to be like.
