Emerging out of the black metal mists of Bergen Norway, a region of the world known for spawning its fair share of extreme music, comes the vintage doom metal outfit known as Syrach. Initially formed back in 1993, the band released its debut disc Silent Seas three years later, and until now there has been no new material, save for a few demos in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Why it's taken these guys over ten years to record a follow up is beyond me (maybe the numerous lineup changes had a lot to do with it?) because the music offered up on Days Of Wrath certainly sounds like a confident band in control of their own future. The music is a de-tuned guitar sludge fest, with an emphasis on ultra heavy Sabbath melodic style riffage, which comes by way of the twin six string assault of 8-Ball and Reichborn, while the death metal guttural grows are handled aptly enough by vocalist Ripper. Most of the songs on Days of Wrath are in the 6 minute range, with a few venturing out in even longer and more adventurous terrain, namely the epic fourteen minute masterpiece "The Firm Grip of Death" and the blistering final track "The Twilight Enigma" which features a guest female vocal spot from Silje Wergeland of Octavia Sperati.
While the music on Days Of Wrath isn't exactly groundbreaking, Syrach more than makes up for this by delivering a solid album full of unrelenting and finely executed doom. There is more than enough here to satisfy the serious head banger in you.
