Falling somewhere in between Evanescence and latter-day Nightwish and The Gathering, Indigo Dying is a studio project put together by Frontiers Records president Serafino Perugino and Los Angeles-based producer Fabrizio Grossi (Starbreaker, Glenn Hughes) to showcase the vocal talents of Chilean vocalist Gisa Vatcky. The songs those two came up with for Vatcky to sing on Indigo Dying's self-titled debut perfectly fit her pitch and style, from gothic metal ("Hear Me") to melodic rock ("Real Life Fairytale") to adult album alternative ("Taken"). Backed by a tight band and guest vocals from former Helloween singer Michael Kiske and ex-Malmsteen throat Mark Boals, Vatcky proves herself a powerful frontwoman. Her clear, tough voice can sing in a variety of styles, and echoes of several Eighties vocalists give her an arena-rock edge. The album's main drawback? Too many songs settle on mid-tempo arrangements, simply because that's where Vatcky sounds most comfortable. Nevertheless, this one's a real pleasant surprise.
