Ahoy matey's! Ready for some fun-filled Pirate metal? Scotland's Alestorm serve up just that on their latest release Captain Morgan's Revenge, a tribute to the Welsh pirate Sir Admiral Henry Morgan. With plenty of sing-along choruses, power metal guitar riffs & double bass drumming, and loads of symphonic keyboards, Captain Morgan's Revenge is like some sort of wild meeting between Tankard, Manowar, and Korpiklaani, as the band has created a mix of power & folk metal styles that will instantly stir up the need to pour yourself a tall glass of ale, climb on top of the nearest table, headbang and sing till the sun rises the next morning. Tunes like "The Huntmaster", "Set Sail and Conquer", and "Wenches & Mead" are all enjoyable fare, if a tad on the cheesy side. Plenty of guitar and keyboard solos abound, which is essential to offset the lyrical content here, as after a while all the stories of drunken escapades and pirate lore gets a bit tedious ("Nancy The Tavern Wench" being a perfect example of this). These Scots obviously had a blast recording this thing, and that's how Captain Morgan's Revenge should be taken, as a fun metal album to swig some beer to with a few of your mates. Nothing more, nothing less.
