Inflikted marks the reunion of Max & Igor Cavalera, brothers and founding members of the legendary Sepultura. While Max left that band years ago to form Soulfly, reunion rumors have been flying around the last few years, but instead of Max going back to Sepultura, the two have found common ground here with Cavalera Conspiracy, along with guitarist Marc Rizzo (Soulfly/Il Nino) and bassist Joe Duplantier (Gojira). As you can imagine, the music is not all that different from what you would expect from either Seputura or Soulfly, as you get a mix if thrash, death metal, and hardcore, with plenty of ethnic Brazilian influences thrown in for good measure. Those traits come into full force on the excellent "Dark Age", especially through Igor's drum work, as this heavy thumper has plenty of Portuguese flavor to go along with the thrashing metal. Max's vocal's throughout are spot on and savage, while Rizzo lays down a wide assortment of crunchy riffs and fleet fingered solos, which should please fans of his shredding solo releases. Surprising is the manic "Hex", a blistering piece combining speed-of-light thrash/hardcore elements that might be the fastest and most brutal song anyone from this band has ever recorded, and is a great segue to a song that shows up later in the CD called "Nevertrust". This one features plenty of sick sweep picking from Rizzo and Igor's turbulent drum blasts, as well as some lethal vocal shards from Max. It's as if the brothers are trying to prove something throughout Inflikted, and if so, it works, as this CD has a lot to offer to both old school Sepultura fans as well as lovers of modern metal. It will be interesting to see where they take this.
