Braindrill: Apocalyptic Feasting

One look at the cover of Apocalyptic Feasting and you can be pretty sure that you will be in store for some pretty gory & brutal death/grind metal from the folks in Braindrill. This is actually their first full-length CD, after the release of their debut EP The Parasites back in 2006. It certainly doesn't hurt when one of the band's big supporters is none other than Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster, who has stated that Braindrill are one of the most musically over the top bands he has ever heard. You'll hear this for yourself the second that opening track "Gorification" comes crashing out of your speakers. The is uber-technical stuff, extreme to the max, featuring plenty of sick guitar and drum work, plus the 'gore' soaked growls, grunts, and screams of Steve Rathjen. The intensity and technicality exhibited on "Parasites" is almost beyond comprehension, drummer Marco Pitruzzella flailing away in a manner that will make you completely dizzy, while guitarist Dylan Ruskin bludgeons you with crushing, technical riffs and loads of lightning fast runs, scrapes, and harmonics. Keeping up with both these monster players is bassist Jeff Hughell, an equally impressive talent who unfortunately is a little lost in the mix here, but if you listen carefully his bass lines are quite impressive. He and Ruskin are all over the place on the insane title track, while "Consumed by the Dead" is just a unbelievable display of technical ferocity on all levels, the musicians ripping into one intricate and brutal passage after another with Rathjen growling & screaming up a storm.

Though Apocalyptic Feasting is surely virtuoso material, some might get a little put off by the non-stop & excessive speeds which Braindrill operate at throughout the CD. A few songs where the band slows down just a tad might have added a little variety here, because as it is Braindrill blast away at Mach 10 from start to finish. Despite that, this is impressive no matter what way you look at it, and grindcore & death metal fans who love the more technical aspects of the genre will no doubt soak this right up. In other words, if you are into Cannibal Corpse, Aeon, Necrophagist, Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage, Dying Fetus, and Decapitated, step right up and sink your teeth into this seething and chaotic maelstrom.
