Something tells me Bronx-based singer-songwriter Jann Klose might sell more copies of Reverie to uninitiated listeners had he opted for another cover image. Not that Klose's close-up is unappealing; it's just a little too in-your face for the subtle complexities of the progressive pop of Reverie. Having spent time in his native Germany, as well as South Africa, Cleveland and New York, Klose brings a variety of influences to his warm, laid-back sound: mild reggae on "Hold Me Down," modern Latin on "Doing Time," Sting-style jazz on "All These Rivers" and British pop on "Give In To This Life."
Klose raised funds to record Reverie, his third studio album, by hosting private concerts, and he's good enough to convince Bryan Ferry engineer Dominick Maita to master the album. But don't worry: There are no hints of Klose's background as an opera singer and traveling member of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Jekyll & Hyde" productions here. Rather, the man's spiritual (but not religious) music is imbued with indie-rock ethos and progressive-rock elegance. Reverie sounds refreshingly vital, tailor-made for adult album alternative (Triple A) radio – and prog fans looking for something a bit more accessible but no less rewarding.
