Melodic death metal meets industrial experimentation on Rat Age (Sworn Kinds Final Verses), the 2006 release from Poland's Thy Disease, now being reissued by Metal Mind Productions. This CD was originally released on the small label Empire Records, so chances are not too many folks heard this the first time around, which is why Metal Mind has chosen to make sure that metalheads get a chance to do so now. Thy Disease are a pretty unique band, as they take influences from such acts as Dark Tranquility, In Flames, and At the Gates, throw in some Polish technical death metal ala Decapitated and Behemoth, and layer in plenty of industrial elements that bring to mind early Fear Factory. The presence of bubbling synths amidst the furious death metal assault give "Enemies" an interesting edge, and on "Antidote", Cube's splatterings of haunting orchestral tones and blips add a certain trip hop or ambient element to what is otherwise a pretty brutal tune. The vocals of Psycho are solid throughout, his heavily accented growls fitting right in with these spacey death arrangements, and the rapid fire drum work of Cloud is right in tandem with the furious riffage courtesy of guitarist/bassist Yanuary.
Rat Age (Sworn Kinds Final Verses) probably won't be for everyone, as it's perhaps a tad too sterile sounding for traditional death metal fans, but if you like modern extreme metal, and are not afraid to allow for a heaping amount of industrial elements, this release from Thy Disease should be worth seeking out.
