If you are familiar with the past work of the Black Metal duo from France known as Spektr then you know to expect the unexpected. In many ways the music on their latest effort which is a mini album entitled Mescalyne, almost continues where their first full length 2006's The Near Death Experience left off. They pummel the listener with both their straight ahead full on guitar assault, which is awash in abstract layers of dissonance, and slightly fractured rhythmic tempos. Just when you've had enough of their vicious little mindf**k of sound, they draw you further into their spiraling vortex with the appropriately titled "Maze Of Torment" which is five minutes of creepy, warped Black Metal ambience.
At only twenty six minutes Mescalyne is unfortunately over just as you're finally beginning to wrap your head around their twisted vision, but in the relatively short amount of time Spektr accomplishes what they originally set out to do. It's almost as if they are operating in their own little sub-genre of Black Metal. Mescalyne is both a harrowing and mesmerizing listening experience.
