Fading Colours: The Beginning 89-93/Black Horse/Time (Reissues)

Beginning life as Bruno the Questionable, Fading Colours eventually became one of Poland's top darkwave/trance/gothic bands. As a stopgap between studio albums, Metal Mind Records has reissued the Black Horse CD from 1995 (recorded under the Bruno name, which was changed to a more commercial moniker before the album's release) and the Time remix EP from 1996, as well as The Beginning 89-93, a remastered compilation of previously released and unreleased material and two bonus videos.

The band's mouthpiece, female singer De Coy, takes some getting used to. She can go from bitchy snarls to baritone warbles to ethereal heights in seconds, and her vocals can be difficult to understand. But it is De Coy's voice – full of sadness, fear, longing and sensuality – that helps Fading Colours, after all these years, still stand out among an increasingly crowded field of female-fronted bands in this genre. The group is now a three-piece, but back when Fading Colours was a larger outfit (both literally and figuratively), "Lie" from Black Horse was a major hit on European radio. Time is much more dance-oriented and marked a new direction for the band. These reissues help listeners trace Fading Colours' evolution from heavy guitars and keyboard sequences to modern electronica.

The three discs may not be so good for driving or working out, but they are plenty good for other things -- providing a decent soundtrack for a wild party with you and a few of your most amorous friends.
