End Of Level Boss: Inside The Difference Engine
Proving that the lasting impact of influential stoner bands like Kyuss is still being felt not only on these shores, but across the pond in Europe as well, along comes this hot shit new band from England, End Of Level Boss in an attempt to pick up the stoner/ doom torch. With an all hands on deck approach this quartet sets out to deliver a disc full of ultra heavy riffage, and while their 2nd full length release Inside The Difference Engine does have it's moments, it ultimately falls short in the end. What the band does have going for them are two dedicated guitarists (Roland Scriver on lead and H. Armstrong on rhythm and vocals) who like to churn out endless amounts of jagged, discordant riffs. Armstrong who also handles the lead vocals, proves he has a more than worthy set of metal pipes sounding at times like a young Chris Cornell. The problem however is with the songs themselves which unfortunately don't really vary much, save for a few exceptions. While a track like "Mr. Dinosaur Is Lost" has a very cool Alice In Chains vibe running through it with it's slow, lumbering groove and nicely layered guitar work, and the opening riffs to "Words Have No Meaning" borrows nicely from Tool's library, the bulk of Inside The Difference Engine never really rises above it's premise primarily due to it's lack of variation and general repetitiveness. This isn't what I'd call a complete right off though as there are a few shining moments here and there, however not enough to really warrant anything more than a couple of spins.
