From the unimaginative title and creativity-free cover to the atonal sounds inside, 13 Tracks is the latest CD of sonic detritus from the Lithuanian experimental-music veteran Gintas K (short for "Kraptavicius," emphasis — at least for this record — on "krap"). While the sound artist deserves credit for converting ordinary noises such as clicks and crackles, plus sine wave drones and ambient textures, into post-apocalyptic dream sequences (with an occasional rhythm tossed in), this is essentially 71 minutes of dissonance that works neither as an active nor a passive listen. Some tracks, such as the shuffling "Kruva Tempu" and the droning "WWW," are barely even perceptible, but "Ka As Zinau" tests listeners' patience with a series of ear-piercing beeps and obnoxious effects. "12-03" is little more than 10-and-a-half minutes of steam-room puffs and glass tinkling, while the warm crackles of "Kazkasss" sound as if Gintas K simply dropped the stylus at the end of a spinning LP and pushed "record."
No one knows what the hell all this means except the artist himself — which, it seems, is just the way he likes it.
