Three releases in, and Bury Your Dead have finally gotten serious. The five lads from New England offer up 11 punishing songs on their latest self-titled Victory Records platter, full of malicious intent and no shortage of extreme savagery, in part thanks to new singer Myke Terry. His Fear Factory-meets-Pantera-meets-NYC hardcore styled roar inflects these tunes with plenty of aggression, and works as a great foil alongside the beefy guitar riffs and pounding rhythms. While occasionally a catchy little number like "Fever Dream" pops up, for the most part this is pretty brutal stuff, mechanized cuts such as "Womb Disease", "Hands to Hide the Shame", and "Disposably Yours" full of menace and some crushing bottom end. In fact, it's the groove that ultimately gives this release most of its shine, something that is easily heard on the infectious "A Devil's Ransom", a song with a killer riff and chunky rhythms that are impossible to ignore. Despite this, one of the biggest problems with Bury Your Dead is that the band is almost trying too hard to crush you with non-stop bombast that many of these songs tend to sound interchangeable after a while. Other than a few exceptions, there's little variety here, and the end result is a release that reeks of power and groove but lacks dynamics.
