John Curtis is a rather unique and eclectic sounding musician out of Portland Oregon who, judging by the subject matter on his latest effort is apparently quite knowledgeable when it comes to writing songs about…food. Although musically this for the most part can be considered pretty mainstream fare, lyrically Curtis not only sings quite a bit about food, but also about a wide variety of other interesting subjects as well, and all with tongue planted firmly in cheek. I mean just checking out some of the 40 odd song titles is enough to pique your interest. Curtis handles all of the keyboards, guitars and percussion as he ponders the true role of the bagel and secretly wishes he was Lita Ford. The music is fun, playful and jazzy, and at times some the offbeat arrangements and quirky lyrics will have you thinking of Frank Zappa and Todd Rundgren. You also just might find yourself singing along when no one's looking too.
If you're in the mood for some lighthearted fare and appreciate well written, straight ahead music with a sense of humor, then Short Songs About Affordable Food should just about fill you up like Chinese food. However don't be surprised if you're hungry about an hour afterwards.
