Satan's Host: The Great American Scapegoat 666
Colorado's evil ensemble Satan's Host have been toiling around the underground extreme metal scene since the late 70's, first starting out as a power metal band and eventually morphing into something they resemble today, a Satanic blackened/death/thrash metal outfit whose latest release on Moribund Records, The Great American Scapegoat 666 (yeah, kind of a silly title, and the CD cover is equally as puzzling) is a solid if unoriginal extreme metal platter. Plenty of intense blast beats and raging tremelo picked guitars litter the landscape on these 13 tunes, with the bellowing growls Eli Elixer providing the vocal blasphemy. Tracks like "Ave Lucifer", "Dragons-Darkness", and "The Cursing -Vampyric Evil-Eye" are all enjoyable extreme metal fare, heavy as hell and well executed from a musical perspective, with just enough atmosphere thrown in to add to the creepy factor. The closing epic "Throne Of Baphomet" really packs a punch, Elixer's gurgling vocals stabbing through the thick walls of riffs and jackhammer drum blasts, as the song takes one twist and turn after another. Overall, there's some decent numbers on The Great American Scapegoat 666, but a few of the songs have a sort of generic feel to them, and the Satanic theme seems a little bit forced at times to the point where it's hard to take seriously. Still, this is a solid release from Satan's Host, so if you dig bands like Angel Corpse, Belphegor, Zyklon, or Behemoth, then you've come to the right place.
