Anew Revolution: Rise

Rise is the debut CD from Anew Revolution, a 4-piece hard rock/metal band from Austin, Texas. Signed to Koch Records, and getting exposed to many fans thanks to tours with Otep, Sevendust, Staind, and Dope, Anew Revolution seemed poised to make their mark on the always crowded metal scene. Is Rise going to help their cause? That's hard to say. On one hand, there are plenty of catchy rockers here, like "Generations", "Saddest Song", and the haunting ballad "Let Go", plus the band does a commendable job on the New Order hit "True Faith", but true metal fans are going to have a hard time finding anything to sink their teeth into here. Sure, tracks like "Rise", "Done", and "Love To Hate" have their moments, but musically speaking there's not a lot happening on this CD, the band falling into territories that have been done before and done better by bands like Saliva, Drowning Pool, and Disturbed. Joey Duenas' vocals are solid, but you get the feeling that he is playing things a little safe. That's kind of how this entire CD comes across, as it seems as if Anew Revolution are trying too hard to come up with a hit single, and desperately seeking a place in the hearts of mainstream metal listeners. Well, I hate to tell you, but the market for this sort of thing came and went more than seven years ago guys. This band looks to have the ability to write a catchy melody, but they are going to have to pack their songs with a little more meat next time around to be able to survive out there in the crazy jungle.
