Doors, The: The Doors- Classic Albums (DVD)
Long regarded as one of the greatest debut albums in rock history, the 1967 self-titled release from The Doors catapulted the band to the top of the charts and remains as powerful a statement 41 years later. This latest installment in the 'Classic Albums' DVD series takes a 45 minute look at this groundbreaking album, complete with interviews with the surviving members of The Doors, engineer Bruce Botnick, manager Bill Siddons, and a host of others. Various live and television clips of the band are also included, as the documentary takes a close look at various songs from the album, especially "Break On Through (To the Other Side)", "The End", "Alabama Song", "Back Door Man", and of course the mega-hit "Light My Fire". While much of the talk centers on Jim Morrison and his penchant for deep poetic lyrics and bizarre antics, listening to Botnick talk about how the songs came together in the studio, and hearing some of the tracks in different settings, is worth the price of admission. If you skip ahead to the bonus features, there's an additional 30+ minutes of interview footage not shown on the VH1 program, including a fascinating segment with keyboardist Ray Manzarek, as he talks about the band peforming "The End" one night at the Whisky -A-Go-Go. Watching Ray relive that moment in time, as he actually plays his keyboard parts in front of you, and mimicking Morrison's stage banter that night, makes for compelling viewing. For fans of the psychedelic mastery of The Doors, this is a must see.
