Celestia: Frigidiis Apotheosia – Abstinencia Genesiis
With last years re-release of their first album, 2002's Apparitia – Sumptuous Spectre, the bar was set pretty high for the French black metal outfit Celestia to further develop their sound and continue exploring the overall themes expressed on that disc. The follow up album Frigidiis Apotheosia – Abstinencia Genesiis finds Sir Noktu Geiistmortt returning with an even more dedicated vision for his bands unique brand of melancholic Black Metal. Noktu's harsh, raspy, gurgling vocal style remains as gruesome and as potent as ever, and this is certainly some of the most brutal vocal work the genre has to offer. His guitar work throughout is also incredibly solid and focused as he intersperses ample amounts of plaintive acoustic passages with raw, bone crunching rhythm's quite effectively, although the guitars in general could still use a bit of beefing up to convey a bit more power and aggression. Malefic from Xasthur is along for the ride this time to help flesh out the sound and add some eerie ambience. He provides some absolutely haunting, frozen sounding keyboard sections which definitely go a long way towards creating the proper musical atmospheres. "A Regrettable Misinterpretation Of Mournfulness", "Morbid Romance", "The Seed Of Negation" and the superb title track all drip with pure, dark, sadistic melancholia. Frigidiis Apotheosia – Abstinencia Genesiis is definitely a step in the right direction for Celestia and also significant upgrade in production, composition and overall performance, from Apparitia – Sumptuous Spectre.
