From the machine-gun drums that penetrate the bulk of Garden of Chaos, to the intricate guest guitar solos from Firewind's Gus G, to Rob Rock's massive vocals, this is a tour-de-force power-metal album. Produced by Roy Z (Judas Priest, Helloween), Garden of Chaos elaborates on all that is likeable about the underrated Rock.
The man's good-vs.-evil lyrics — his last album was called Holy Hell — give additional heft to heavy-as-hell songs like "Satan's Playground" and the title track, while "Savior's Call" and "Spirit in the Sky" bring a sense of melodic interplay often missing in the genre. For a change of pace, Rock closes the album with a tribute to his son in "Ode to Alexander," and the boy's voice can be heard as the CD makes its final spin.
In simplest terms, Rock rocks.
