Few bands have had as many casualties as Louisiana's Soilent Green, their history filled with line-up changes, auto accidents, murder, suicide, and great loss due to Hurricane Katrina. However, none of this has slowed them down, as they have continued to crank out one solid album after another of doomy, Southern death-core. Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction is their latest concoction, a brutal 11 song affair that once again sees the band firing on all cylinders, apparently pissed off at everything and channeling that anger through their music. The thick, crunchy Pantera-meets-Crowbar guitar riffs permeate tunes like "Mental Acupuncture" and "Blessed In The Arms Of Servitude", while "In The Same Breath" has a sort of swampy hardcore by way of Celtic Frost feel to it, Ben Falgoust's throaty roar doing battle with plenty of crushing riffs and pounding drum blasts. Guitarist Brian Patton lays down some inventive riffing on "Lovesick", a real mosh-friendly piece, while "Superstition Aimed At One's Skull" is just a great example of sludge-ridden extreme metal, raging drums, brutal guitars, and gutteral vocals forming a highly potent attack.
Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction is ultimately a very brutal and punishing release, sure to please longtime fans of the band and those who love groove laden extreme metal albums. Glad to see that Soilent Green are moving right along despite the tragedy that they have been subjected to. Carry on brothers, carry on.
