Kunita, Daisuke: Fuzzy Logic

There's nothing fuzzy about Fuzzy Logic, the snazzy all-instrumental debut CD from Japanese guitarist Daisuke Kunita. Schooled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Kunita displays a wide range of influences – from Jimi Hendrix and to Allan Holdsworth – without committing to any particular musical style. On "Fragments," he channels Stevie Ray Vaughan with colorful blues rock that soon splits into multiple sonic directions during the course of its eight minutes. "On Again, Off Again" is a dense mid-tempo jazz-rocker, while "Sharp" ventures into fusion territory and another eight-minute track, "Flat Line," features Kunita's fretted interplay against a jazzy rhythm section. On "Tonal Gravity," Kunita teams with pianist Kan Sano for a more-traditional jazz piece, and "Acid Approach" spotlights a snappy soprano sax.

Built around a power-trio with six strings at the forefront, these eight tracks herald the arrival of a new melodic guitarist at ease in either a solo or band format.
