Collaborating Torture is as the name implies, a collaboration between Israeli ambient recording artist / producer Maor Appelbaum and the late Matt Gibney of Hollowing from So I Had To Shoot Him and Hollowing fame. This one dark, droning ambient composition which was recorded back in 2005 would also prove to be one of Gibney's last recordings prior to succumbing to a drug overdose in January of 2006. It has taken over two years for this recording to see the light of day but thanks a joint effort between Israeli labels Topeth Prophet and HCV Records it's now finally a reality.
The untitled track which runs almost 55 minutes was originally recorded by Gibney and then treated afterwards by Appelbaum. What you get is an intense, free flowing and almost distant sounding composition which surprisingly relies on very little in the way of added instrumentation to create it's eerie atmosphere. The chaotic industrial sounding beats which are prevalent in the early stages of the track, quickly give way to a much sparser, ambient background. Along the way the subtle sound of chimes are coupled with faint hints of piano and guitars, but because they are buried deep within the massive sounding passages of pure mechanical drone, the listener has to pay close attention in order to be able to pick it out.
Collaborating Torture is quite the trip into what is a pretty bleak subterranean landscape, however if you're one of those patient listeners that appreciates this kind of music, you should find this to be quite a rewarding listening experience.
