After 2006's convoluted, conceptual mess, Three Seats Behind A Triangle, Polish proggers Osada Vida return with their second full-length album, The Body Parts Party. Granted, it's another concept album, but a much more logical and clever one. Each of these eight songs contains both a title and a subtitle: the name of a body part or organ and a phrase that relates to that part or organ.
For example, the album opens with "Body: The Body Parts Party," a track that makes it clear from the beginning that this record rocks more than Three Seats Behind A Triangle. "Liver: Mr. Liver's Letter To You" and "Heart: Back and Forth" boast plenty of Pink Floyd moments, while "Brain: Mind On Cloud Nine" reflects the laid-back groove its title suggests. "Tongue: A White Lie" emerges as the album's strongest track, with enough memorable melodies to put Osada Vida (at least temporarily) in a category with today's best modern-prog bands.
Bassist Lukasz Lisiak's vocals are still buried in the mix, the production runs a little thin at times and this quartet still seems undecided about what kind of band it wants to be as elements of prog, metal, jazz and alternative rock permeate the album's dense core. In other words, The Body Parts Party doesn't make any of my body parts tingle, but it certainly offers a much more enjoyable listening experience than its predecessor.
