Kreator: At the Pulse of Kapitulation (DVD/CD)

Remember the Live In East Berlin VHS tape from many years ago, representing Kreator's triumphant concert in Germany that was performed shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall? Well, that 1990 concert is now the main attraction on the DVD At the Pulse of Kapitulation , a DVD/CD set that brings that concert back to life in all its thrashing glory. Not only do you get the re-edited show in 5.1 mix (courtesy of Andy Sneap), and the 1991 Hallucinative Comas video (Kreator's mini-horror movie for the Coma of Souls album of the same year), but you also get the Live In East Berlin show on a bonus CD as well. Sound like hours of good old German thrash fun? Well, it certainly is!

For starters, the main set here is not the most expertly filmed metal concert you'll ever see, with perhaps too many quick cuts, odd angles, and a stage that was at times way too dark to really take in what was going on, the band were on fire that evening, delivering many crushing thrash classics from their catalog up to that time. Highlights include "Under the Guillotine", "Toxic Trace", "Pleasure to Kill", "Extreme Aggression", and of course, legendary cuts "Flag of Hate", "Terrible Certainty", and "Riot of Violence". Fronted by the always dependable Mille Petrozza and the relentless drum attack of Ventor, Kreator was then and continue to be a non-stop metal assault that knows how to crank out intense extreme thrash.

Hallucinative Comas represents the bands video movie to the solid Coma of Souls, and contains plenty of frightening and lurid imagery to go along with the songs from the album. Director Andreas Marshall went back and re-edited the movie, giving us what is essentially his 'directors cut', with plenty of footage put back in deemed too intense back in the day. Much of this film plays like a morbid early 90's Norwegian black metal video, including plenty of scenes taking place in snow covered cemetaries, among lots of other creepy settings.

Throw in a documentary, the CD, and you have one 'must have' package for Kreator and thrash fans alike.
