Shimmering keyboards and chunky guitars make for an appealing progressive-metal debut from Denmark's Chrome Shift. Ripples in Time is loaded with melodic and pristine songs that aptly demonstrate this quintet's command of the genre. Singer Rasmus Bak has a full voice that doesn't reach the dizzying heights of some prog-metal vocalists, and his subtle delivery leaves plenty of air for the music to breathe.
That said, Chrome Shift's music could be bolder, with more creative and compelling arrangements. Fewer dominant keyboards and louder guitars would help. The four-part title-track suite that closes the album hints at the direction in which the band may be heading — a heavier sound with greater use of lead and background vocals — and leaves the door wide open for Chrome Shift's next album.
