Bloom Project: Prismatic Season

Fans of mysterious avant-garde/jazz will probably get a kick out of Prismatic Season (Live at the Sudden Sound Series Krannert Art Museum), a live CD from Bloom Project. Comprised of Thollem Mcdonas (piano), Rent Romus (sax, flute), Jon Brumit (drums), and Steven Baker (challis drone), this is dark, adventurous, explorations into free jazz and the avant-garde, 9 tracks which dive straight into frenzied improvisations. Romus should be well known to those into this sort of thing, his nightmarish sax squonking through dissonant pieces like "Chandelier", "Sporatic Reflection", and "To Seed" with reckless abandon, the latter with chaotic drum accompaniment from Brumit. Mcdonas adds in his 'heavy metal bebop' lines on the bizarre "Bloom", and the closing near 17-minute epic "Challis Drone #1" features Baker on his invention the challis drone, which does exactly that, drone on endlessly with a sort of metallic buzzing that barely qualifies as anything musical. It's a shame that so much time is wasted on this piece, as the rest of the CD is actually quite interesting at times and worth a listen to if you have the patience for some 'out there' jazz.
