Trees: Lights Bane

If you like slow, crushingly heavy power chords and drone like soundscapes drenched in a massive warm cocoon of amplified feedback, then you'll find that the debut disc Lights Bane from the doom outfit Trees is certainly worth investigating.

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest (Portland Oregon) this quartet has serves up an absolutely colossal sounding album consisting of just two compositions, "Nothing" and "Black" which together combine for a total running time of just slightly under thirty minutes. There are no grooves or rhythm's to speak of as both the guitar and drum approach can be considered fairly rudimentary, not to mention the truly sinister vocals that gurgle with the sensation of someone being tortured. Be forewarned though that both of these tracks unfold at an excruciatingly deliberate pace, plodding forward with the premise that there will be some kind of pay off in the end. Unfortunately though, while the tension does continue to build within the music as each track unfolds, there doesn't seem to be a general feeling that either song achieves any sort of definitive climax.

The bottom line is the music on Lights Bane is probably only going to appeal to a limited audience and while it's far from being either a masterpiece or a complete waste of time, it ultimately rests somewhere in the middle.
