On the self-released five-song EP Trapped Within the Words, the Norwegian quintet Ancestral Legacy offers its own take on male/female-fronted metal. The vocal dichotomy between Elin Anita Omholt (the "beauty") and Eddie Risdal (the "beast") will appeal to different types of headbangers. Her voice is as silky as his is rough, as demonstrated on "Forsaken," "Wordless History" and "Disclosed." Musically falling somewhere between After Forever, Edenbridge and Within Temptation — although Omholt, thankfully, is not an operatic singer — Ancestral Legacy has the potential to break from the genre's generic tendencies. Case in point: Glimmer, the soothing and acoustic Celtic-music instrumental that closes the EP, includes a hidden section at the end featuring Omholt's pretty voice entwined with a mournful piano. It's a classy way to end a disc that is alternately elegant and brusk.
