Jorn: Lonely Are the Brave
The nine songs on Lonely Are the Brave — the fifth solo album from the giant, golden-throated Norwegian Jorn Lande — sound instantly familiar. Perhaps that's because we've already heard Jorn's voice so much in recent years on albums by Masterplan, Ayreon and Avantasia, or even the two discs he recorded with Symphony X singer Russell Allen. Or it could be because the man sounds like Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale — just as dark but sometimes heavier and more guttural. Or maybe it's because Lonely Are the Brave rocks in the tradition of epic Seventies and Eighties hard rock and heavy metal.
In other words, this isn't groundbreaking stuff. But like mac and cheese or mashed potatoes and gravy are often considered comfort foods, Jorn's blurring of Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Whitesnake can be deemed comfort tunes. And while he does get stuck in mid-tempo rockers singing lyrics better suited to Axel Rudi Pell's band, you can't help but still raise your fist, bang your head and pledge allegiance to the almighty power chord.

Jorn: Lonely Are the Brave Posted by Scott Jessup, SoT Staff Writer on 2009-01-14 01:35:56 My Score:
Jorn Lande is back after some impressive guest appearances on Ayreon and Avantasia releases, with Lonely Are The Brave. Pagan's Mind guitar wiz Jorn Viggo Lofstad returns much to this reviewers delight, they being one of my top bands greatly due to his exceptional guitar handiwork.
While this CD doesn't beat Jorn's earlier album The Duke, in fact I had a quick listen to Lonely Are The Brave a while back and a few of the tracks "Shadow People", "Promises" and "The Inner Road" stood out, but didn't entice me enough as I found the rest lacked consistency. Now I have given Lonely Are The Brave more time I was probably a bit hasty with my first impression, as it's the sort of album that takes time to grow on you. One thing I will say is I prefer his efforts with Masterplan much more than this, and that band was better with his and Uli Kusch's input.
Lonely Are The Brave is a solid effort from the very talented performer in Jorn Lande and his band, and I'm sure many loyal fans will probably have already purchased this one. So for those whom haven't my advice is get Jorn's 2006 release The Duke instead if you haven't already, otherwise Lonely Are The Brave is a try before you buy.
